What are the Four Components of Mental Fitness?

Mental and physical fitness have the same degree of importance, for mental fitness also influences many activities in life. It is a state of life when people recognise their potential for coping with life stressors, working productively, and contributing to their community's issues. Just as one trains the body to be physically strong, one can train the mind to be resilient and agile.


The Four Basic Components of Mental Fitness:

Emotional well-being, social connections, cognitive flexibility, and good physical health are types of mental fitness that everyone must possess. These components help you work toward good balance and a healthy mental state.


1. Emotional Well-Being:

Weighted against Self-Responsibility and Self-Regulation Emotional well-being is the foundation of mental fitness. It involves being aware of one's feelings, working on them, caring for them and crowding the emotions together. Emotional well-being is when a person can moderate the stressors, express feelings, and recover from setbacks and bad events in life.

Emotional well-being is a function of self-awareness, how one knows what goes around him, entailing its meaning, and values it. With self-awareness, all mindfulness practices, journaling, and even therapy can help build this regulation skill.

The Mental Health Foundation UK states that emotional intelligence encourages the recognition and expression of emotions, thus lessening anxiety, depression, and stress. As per the Mental Health Foundation: "When we are mentally well, we enjoy our life and environment, and people in it."


2. Social Connections: Constructing a Network of Support:

Being social is inherent to humans. Humans need strong attachments for cognitive health and to satisfy their need for emotional support, social acceptance and belonging, thus serving as a protective factor in adverse situations associated with mental problems.
