How can trauma impact a person's mental health and well-being?

Dr Korallo

Trauma is an emotional response to a disturbing event in an individual’s life. Trauma is experienced because of personal events; no one else can understand that situation. A disturbing personal situation can be in the form of an accident, emotional or physical abuse, witnessing a criminal activity, losing a loved one, etc. Most people stay in denial or remain in shock. An individual might have experienced a similar traumatic event as someone else, but their ways of reacting and the effect of the situation on them can be completely different. Traumatic events make an individual feel neglected, humiliated, unsafe, trapped, frightened, abandoned, threatened, etc., and such individuals can have difficulties moving on in their lives.

What can trauma look like?

Though trauma is ‘invisible’ and cannot be seen very prominently, there are ways through which trauma can be detected. An individual experiencing trauma may experience nausea, anxiety, numbness, anger, guilt, shame, increased heart rate, headache, fatigue, sweating, irregular sleep hygiene, memory difficulties, lack of focus, intrusive thoughts, and sudden mood swings. For instance, an individual may start trembling just at the thought of the traumatic situation.
