Emotion Management Through Movement and Mindfulness

Updated: Aug 28

Stress and Emotions

Emotional intensity refers to the strength and frequency with which an individual experiences emotions, as well as how they respond to those heightened states. While feeling deeply is not inherently negative, intense emotions can become overwhelming if not managed effectively.

It’s important to recognise when emotional regulation becomes necessary — such as when your emotions begin to feel unmanageable or your reactions seem out of proportion to the situation. Another key sign is when emotions start to affect your relationships, often leading to frequent arguments, miscommunication, or emotional withdrawal.

Many individuals with high emotional sensitivity report feeling drained or exhausted as a result of constant emotional processing. Left unaddressed, emotional intensity can contribute to an increased risk of developing mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or emotional dysregulation.

Learning to accept uncomfortable emotions — rather than suppress or avoid them — is crucial for long-term emotional resilience. The more we resist certain feelings, the more powerful and disruptive they can become.

Our TheraFit Programme

At TheraFit London, we offer a science-led and trauma-informed Emotion Management Programme designed for individuals who experience emotional overwhelm or find it difficult to stay grounded under stress.

This programme combines practical techniques from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) with the therapeutic benefits of yoga and movement, helping to calm the nervous system and restore balance. You’ll learn how to centre yourself, regulate emotional responses, and build long-lasting strategies for managing stress and emotional intensity.

The integration of DBT and yoga promotes a mind-body connection, supporting your mental and physical well-being holistically. While DBT provides skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation, yoga reinforces these practices by combining conscious breath, movement, and full-body awareness.

Programme Structure and Process

ree

The Emotion Management Programme consists of:

  • 5 DBT-based group sessions

  • 5 Yoga group sessions

These take place weekly, either in person at our King’s Cross clinic or online for those who prefer remote access.

Your journey begins with a joint assessment conducted by both a qualified psychologist and a fitness specialist. This dual approach ensures your programme is truly personalised, taking into account your physical, mental, and emotional needs from day one. During this session, we’ll also take time to understand your concerns, priorities, and any specific challenges you’d like to address.

Based on your assessment, we will develop a flexible and effective treatment plan tailored to your stress triggers, emotional patterns, and personal goals. A follow-up session will take place 1–2 months after completing the programme to review your progress and offer continued support where needed.

Techniques and Benefits

Yoga introduces a range of grounding techniques that support mental and emotional health. These include:

  • Breath awareness

  • Slow, conscious movement

  • Repetitive flow for emotional regulation

  • Balancing postures for focus and presence

These practices create a safe, mindful space that reduces anxiety and restores calm.

From DBT, you’ll learn to recognise and name emotions, understand emotional patterns, and respond rather than react. Skills such as Half-Smile and Willing Hands help shift your emotional state and relax your nervous system. Mindfulness of the five senses is also taught to ground you when emotions feel overwhelming.

Together, these approaches support the development of healthy emotional responses and foster lasting self-awareness.
